macOS Desktop Upgrades

If you wish to upgrade your Apple desktop system to the latest version of macOS then you can do so yourself via the Self Service application in the /Applications folder. Once the upgrade is installed the system will reboot and complete the installation.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are updating the system to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 and your system has network mounted home directories then the update will convert your system to use local home directories, for more information please see the webpage here.

The macOS High Sierra desktops upgrade and conversion to local home directories takes a long time so we recommend installing the update overnight.

Please consider the following before upgrading the system:

  • You may need to recompile any extra libraries or software that you have installed yourself onto the system. For example if you have installed MyMacPorts then you will need to recompile your macports tree.
  • If you have installed any applications yourself then these may also need to be updated.
  • If you wish to upgrade to macOS Mojave please upgrade to macOS High Sierra first so your home directory is converted to be a local home directory.
