Recommendations for Connecting Systems to the Physics Cable Network

The following procedures should be followed when connecting equipment to the Physics cable network. This is necessary to prevent disruption to other users from configuration problems on the equipment being connected.

The recommendations below are for equipment which will be more or less continuously connected to the network.

For devices such as laptops which may be absent from the network for varying lengths of time under normal circumstances see the guidelines for connecting to the Physics network.

  1. Existing system used recently
    1. Check the network connection.
    2. If not working ask for the network socket to be activated: send details of the network socket label and room number to IT Support.
    3. Connect the system and use.
  2. Existing system not used for a long time (1 month+ -> 1 year+)
    1. Contact IT Support to have the system configuration checked (network address may have been reused after 1 year) and updated (monthly security, etc updates).
    2. Check the network connection.
    3. If not working ask for the network socket to be activated: send details of the network socket label and room number to IT Support.
    4. Connect the system and use.
  3. New system (newly purchased or new to the department)
    1. Contact IT Support to have the system configured for use on the Physics network.
    2. Check the network connection.
    3. If not working ask for the network socket to be activated: send details of the network socket label and room number to IT Support.
    4. Connect the system and use.
