Network Services

The Network team develops and installs the computer network within all the Physics buildings.
We control the routing , and allocation of our sub nets. We control access and security of the network via our firewalls.

In addition we can advise on the Chorus IP telephony system and work with building services to configure and control the electronic door locks.

We will usually supply all components up to and including the cable from the computer to the wall. 1 Gbit/s connections are provided to the wall sockets, and ports can be activated upon request. Higher speed networking is used by some departmental clusters and paid for by local project budgets. Anyone requiring additional facilities will be expected to contribute to the cost.
Wireless networking is provided in common areas and is slowly extending to cover many offices. The buildings we inhabit are full of metal and concrete which makes it difficult to provide good coverage everywhere at a reasonable cost.
