LHC Run 2 collisions seen by ATLAS
Congratulations to all of the ATLAS Oxford team involved in detecting, triggering, recording, and reconstructing the first collision events seen at the record-breaking energy of 13 TeV!

Oxford Physics features on QI
Followers of the popular BBC TV quiz show QI, hosted by Stephen Fry, were able to enjoy a demonstration of superconducting levitation developed in the Oxford Physics Department. The show, which was entitled Levity and was aired on 24 Oct 2014, included a sequence in which Stephen Fry cools a slab of ceramic superconductor in liquid nitrogen and demonstrates it levitating over a permanent magnet through the mechanism of flux exclusion (the Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect).

Oxford Master Course in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics
From the academic year 2015/16, Oxford Physics and Oxford Mathematics will jointly offer a new masters level course in mathematical and theoretical physics. Students from outside Oxford can apply to join the MSc mode of the course and will study for an MSc in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics. Oxford MPhys, MMath or MPhysPhil students will be able to apply for transfer to the MMathPhys mode of the course after their third year and study mathematical and theoretical physics in their fourth year, instead of following the fourth year of their original degree course.

Oxford thesis wins European Physical Society Award
The Plasma Physics Division of the European Physical Society has awarded Edmund Highcock its prize for the best PhD thesis of 2012. Edmund, whose supervisor was Alex Schekochihin, is currently a Fellow by Examination of Magdalen College and works in the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics. His thesis was entitled "The zero turbulence manifold of fusion plasmas".

The Oxford Doctoral Training Partnership in Environmental Research
The Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts, yesterday announced that the University of Oxford was one of 15 Universities to be awarded part of £100m of new NERC investment in Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs).
The Department of Physics is one of the core departments of the Oxford DTP in Environmental Research, offering a novel training environment across three broad science streams, including a Physical Climate Science stream of high relevance for Physics undergraduates considering graduate research in Climate Physics.
