"Marvellous Magnets" - part of the Quantum Materials Winter Workshops series
Registration required - please register for this event by filling out this form.
Explore magnets and magnetic fields with us using a brand new online demo!
In this 45 minute long workshop, we will delve into the world of magnets, including live demonstrations to show some weird and wonderful magnetic effects.

Challenges & Changes in Physics: Prof Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Prof. Bell Burnell discusses her research and the challenges that physics & physicists face, and shares some of her work to push for change.
Challenges & Changes in Physics: Dr Clara Barker
Dr Clara Barker discusses her research and the challenges that physics and physicists face, and shares some of her work to push for change.
Challenges & Changes in Physics: Dr Jess Wade
Dr Jess Wade discusses her research and the challenges that physics and physicists face, and shares some of her work to push for change.
In the first lecture of this new series from the Department of Physics, we will hear from Dr Jess Wade [she/her], a research fellow at Imperial College, London where she works on chiral organic light emitting diodes. She is an advocate for minority voices in science and has created hundreds of Wikipedia pages to amplify the achievements of women and people of colour in science.

A week in the life of a physicist
‘Ensuring that our doors are open to all is something that we are continually working on,’ says Kathryn Boast, Access Officer for the Department of Physics. ‘Showing young people what it means to be a physicist – or someone who supports a physicist’s work – is an important aspect of demystifying this world and that’s why, in spite of COVID-19, we went ahead with our annual summer school this year.’

Promoting physics: outreach in lockdown
Physics can be a hard sell. Just like its stablemate, maths, people can be quick to write it off as not for them – but yet is everything and everywhere. It’s fascinating. It’s life and the universe. And, yes, it is also quite hard. Faced with such an uphill battle, how does the Department of Physics outreach team ‘reach out’ to school children and community groups to convince them otherwise? To encourage different voices into the field? What does the team do to achieve its objectives of increasing diversity in STEM for school children and increasing access for disadvantaged students?
Q&A with Physics & Philosophy students
Are you thinking about applying to study Physics and Philosophy at Oxford? Maybe you are interested, but have some questions? Or maybe you want to get to know the "real" Oxford?
We’re going to be running an online Q&A with current Physics & Philosophy students on Thursday 3 September 2020 at 16:30-17:30. This is your chance to ask a panel of undergraduates what they think! You can bring questions about applications and preparation, or about studying Physics and Philosophy in Oxford, or student life, or anything you think you want to know.

2020 Schools Poster Competition: Magnetism
This year, the Department of Physics are inviting you to design a poster all about magnetism!
You can create a poster for one of two categories:
- An infographic style poster, telling us all about some aspect of magnetism, or
- A research style poster, explaining an experiment that you have carried out yourself that explores magnetism
This competition is open to any students in Year 3 through to Year 13 and will be judged in age categories based on Key Stage.
"Neutron Scattering in Quantum Magnetism" (part of the Quantum Materials Seminars for Y10 to Y13)
Quantum Materials Seminars for Year 10 to Year 13 students
(These will be given on four different dates, with different speakers)
"Magnificent Muons" (part of the Quantum Materials Seminars for Y10 to Y13)
Quantum Materials Seminars for Year 10 to Year 13 students
(These will be given on four different dates, with different speakers)
