The light fantastic - a tour of the electromagnetic spectrum

Date:
15 Dec 2015 - 6:15pm to 7:15pm
Venue:
martinwood
Audience:
General public (Age 12+)

Humans are able to view the world in all the colours of the rainbow - but there are far more colours that we can't see. From insects using ultraviolet light to see patterns on flowers to snakes detecting their prey using thermal infrared, other types of light can reveal unseen detail all around us. Scientists use satellites to measure these other types of light to observe the Earth and the way it is changing around us. This demonstration lecture will explore these methods, as well as the properties of light itself, in a whistle stop tour of the spectrum.

10 Dec 2015 - 12:00am

FULLY BOOKED

This event gives students a taster of Physics and Material Science at Oxford. Students will learn how physicists gaze into the far reaches of the cosmos, address pressing questions about the Earth's climate and explore the strange world of quantum mechanics. There will be particular emphasis on ‘What is Material Science?’, showing how the interdisciplinary subject spans the physics and chemistry of matter, and explores the fascinating world of materials and their real world applications.

What is chaos? What is infinity? Can machines think? The links between Science and Philosophy are broad and deep, extending well beyond the obvious overlaps in logic, artificial intelligence, and ethics. Some of the greatest philosophers of the past - from Aristotle to Newton - are now known as scientists. Sir Isaac Newton's first book, Mathematical principles of Natural Philosophy, outlines this everlasting relationship between science and philosophy which can still be seen today.
