A surprising twist on skyrmions
Magnetic tomography has been used to reconstruct a tornado-like 3D magnetic skyrmion structure
In Conversation with: CalTech President Thomas Rosenbaum: New Ways to Interrogate Nature
CalTech President Thomas Rosenbaum will discuss new ways to interrogate nature on 7 June 2018 from 12:00-14:00 in the Physics Department (Audrey Wood Seminar Room).
President Rosenbaum will share stories of great discoveries with a CalTech bent and how they illustrate the creativity, persistence, and inspiration of science. He intends to make remarks for 20 to 30 minutes and to take questions on any topic desired for the rest of the time.
This event is free and open for all students and researchers, but there are only 40 places.

Controlling magnetic skyrmion motion without an electric current
Researchers from the University of Oxford have used resonant elastic X-ray scattering (REXS) at the Diamond Light Source (Didcot, UK) for the first demonstration of using a field gradient to control the motion of magnetic skyrmions.

Quantum Materials Public Lecture 2018
The Inaugural Quantum Materials Public Lecture will be presented by Professor Andrew Boothroyd. Please join us for an exploration of quantum materials - what they are, what they can do, and why they are so profoundly interesting!
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception in the Martin Wood Lecture Theatre Foyer.

Professor Stephen Hawking, 1942-2018
On 13 March 2018, physicists awoke to news that Prof Stephen Hawking, surely Oxford’s best known physics undergraduate (Univ. 1959), had died peacefully in his sleep. He leaves behind a monumental legacy.
Oxford Symposium on Quantum Materials 2018
An annual interdisciplinary forum to bring together physicists, chemists, materials scientists and theoreticians in and around Oxford to advance the science and promote direct collaboration between groups interested in novel quantum materials and phenomena.
The theme of this year is Dynamics and Topology in Quantum Materials and it will take place at Somerville College, Oxford on 27 April 2018.
This symposium is organized by Amalia I. Coldea and Paolo G. Radaelli and is supported by the Oxford Quantum Materials Platform Grant.
Deadline: 9 April 2018

Enterprising Women
Join us and be inspired by Dr. Cecilia Muldoon, avid oenophile, physicist, classic car fanatic and amateur ballerina!
Building on our previous talks, Cici Muldoon will be sharing lessons and insights from her journey from researcher to entrepreneur and CEO.
As usual we will be offering a networking lunch, from local social enterprises who combine making delicious food with doing good!
