Horizon 2020 grant for PeroCUBE

Oxford's Department of Physics is pleased to announce a Horizon 2020 Grant for perovskite-based lighting, wearables and fabric devices with LiFi and photovoltaic capability has been approved and started 1 April 2020.

The EU H2020-funded project PeroCUBE aims at developing flexible, lightweight perovskite-based electronics, creating new commercial opportunities for the lighting, energy and telecom industries. The consortium brings together 14 industrial and academic partners from 10 European countries.

Seeing the light: untapping terahertz

Scientists from the University of Oxford’s Department of Physics have managed to record the full polarisation state of terahertz pulses by developing a nanowire-based sensor.

Séamus Davis awarded Royal Society Research Professorship

Professor Séamus Davis is one of six world-class scientists to have been awarded a prestigious Royal Society Research Professorship. The appointment recognises scientists that have made – and that continue to make – exceptional contributions to science; the Research Professorship award provides the means for eminent scientists to focus on, and devote more time to, their ambitious and original research.

COVID-19: physics in the real world

Scientists around the world are racing to understand more about the COVID-19-causing virus – and physicists at Oxford are no exception. 'Without physics and physicists there could be no modern technological society, from microelectronics and telecommunications, to LCD displays and PET scanners in hospitals; it is therefore not surprising that physics has much to offer in the battle against CoV2,' explains Head of Department, Professor Ian Shipsey.

Measure and control: COVID-19 rapid detection

A group of researchers led by the Department of Physics at Oxford University is working on a new method that would allow extremely rapid detection of the virus that causes COVID-19 – in as little as one minute.

The Oxford Physics Y12 Summer School is planned to run from 27th - 31st July 2020. Anyone in Year 12 or equivalent is welcome to apply. We will be constantly considering the summer school in light of arrangements for the coronavirus pandemic, but are currently planning as though it will go ahead.

Oxford physicist receives muon science prize

Professor Stephen Blundell from the Department of Physics at Oxford University has been awarded the prestigious Yamazaki Prize by the International Society for Muon Spectroscopy. The prize recognises his outstanding, sustained work in the field; Professor Blundell has been using muons to study the behaviour of advanced materials for more than 25 years.
