VPN Services

The University runs a campus wide VPN service and it is recommended that you use this in preference to the physics department service. If this has any issues for you, please contact IT support who will advise on possible other solutions.

Help on the campus VPN service is here. The campus system requires you to load additional software on your client but this allows a secure service to be provided on a wider range of clients than the Physics department service.

There VPN service in the Physics Department is provided by

  • VPN.PHYSICS.OX.AC.UK.

The VPN service was moved to a new system in September 2016. . The service supports PPTP as before but this is now considered to be relatively insecure so where possible please use SSTP instead. SSTP is interesting because it only uses the well known web server protocol HTTPS and it therefore almost certain to be able to get through remote firewalls. VPN over SSTP is built into Windows 7 etc but addtional software is required for Linux and OSX.

There are some instructions for using VPN to Physics from different platforms.
