Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell elected as next Royal Society of Edinburgh President

Distinguished Astrophysicist Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell DBE, FRS, FRSE, MRIA will succeed Sir John Arbuthnott MRIA as the newly elected President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) starting October 2014.

Commenting on the election, Sir John said, "I am delighted to welcome Dame Jocelyn as my successor. Her scientific standing, her public profile and her great breadth of experience will greatly benefit the Royal Society of Edinburgh."

Chris Lintott awarded The Beatrice Tinsley Prize

Chris Lintott has been awarded the Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize of the American Astronomical Society for the creation of the Zooniverse. The award is in recognition of the citizen science programs at Zooniverse.org, which have led nearly a million people to discover and classify galaxies, planets and star clusters.

The first project, Galaxy Zoo, was launched in 2007 and we now support more than twenty projects in astronomy and other disciplines.

The Fowler Prize in Astronomy has been awarded to Dr Joanna Dunkley from Astrophysics at the University of Oxford.
