Galaxy Zoo wins the RAS Group Achievement Award
The Royal Astronomical Society has given the Galaxy Zoo team – including the volunteers who have made the project the success it is – their Group Achievement Award for 2019.

Mars InSight Landing
Members of the public were invited to the Department on Nov. 26, 2018 to join researchers from Oxford Physics, Imperial College, Bristol University, RAL Space and the UK Space Agency, who have worked on the Mars Insight mission, to celebrate its scheduled landing on Mars.

The Department was again well represented at the annual Oxfordshire Science Festival, this year re-branded as the IF Oxford, the Oxfordshire Science and Ideas Festival. We spoke to over 1,000 people about our research at events across the city.
Stargazing Oxford 2019
Stargazing Oxford returns on the 26th January 2019 from 2pm to 9pm (last entry 8.30pm)
Each year over 1,000 people of all ages gather at Stargazing Oxford as they seek to explore the wonders of the Universe. Join us again for a space-themed open day in the Department of Physics. Activties include talks, hands-on stalls and observing (night-sky, solar and radio).

Family Fun Christmas Lecture
This year’s Family Fun Christmas Lecture is two talks in one! The event provides an exciting opportunity for children to learn more about physics. The talks explore how physics can help us answer the big questions about our universe as well as providing solutions for global problems. There will be plenty of exciting demonstrations with liquid nitrogen, exploding hydrogen balloons and more!

Stellar UV Light and the Origins of Life - Prof. Dimitar Sasselov - ASTOR LECTURE 2018
The lecture will discuss recent research results on the astrophysical and planetary environmental context that makes possible the synthesis of precursors to RNA, peptides and lipids. The focus will be on the role of mid-range UV light as a source of energy and as a very specific selection agent in chemical evolution.
