Central ssh Access from Windows

Access to linux machines within the Department must be done via the bastion server which is available for external access.

We recommend you use the Putty program to access linux machines from Windows. It will be installed on Department provided Windows computers or you can install it from self-service or from here: https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/.

How to log in to from one central linux machine to another

Logging in to another desktop from a standard departmental desktop

To log in to another desktop from your departmentally administered Linux desktop, log in with your physics user name and password either using 'ssh' or 'remote desktop'.

ssh

You will need to know the name of the other desktop machine and possibly the fully qualified domain name. What this means is, if you are trying to log into a machine called 'tplxdt01' there are several possibilities. Try them in this order.

Note: connections must go via bastion.physics.ox.ac.uk, ideally using it as a jump proxy. Some of these instructions do not include details of how to do that yet.

Executive summary

Connect to your machine from anywhere by using the SSH gateway server bastion.physics.ox.ac.uk as an SSH jump proxy. Use your Physics username (without the preceding "PHYSICS\".) In the same way, you can log into most systems inside our network that support ssh access.
