CLARIFY Measurement Campaign in South-East Atlantic

We will contribute to the UK measurement campaign CLoud-Aerosol-Radiation Interactions and Forcing (CLARIFY-2016), targeting the interaction of aerosols from wildfires with the extensive stratocumulus cloud deck off the coast of southern Africa:

Figure: Highly absorbing biomass burning aerosol emissions from wildfires over southern Africa (fire emissions) are advected (MODIS satellite retrieved aerosol optical depth) over the persistent deck of low level clouds (MODIS cloud fraction) off the coast.

CLARIFY's key objectives are to

  • Measure and understand the physical, chemical, optical and radiative properties of BBAs in
    the key SE Atlantic region (WP2).
  • Measure, understand, evaluate and improve the physical properties of the SE Atlantic
    stratocumulus clouds and their environment in a range of models (WP2, 4, 5)
  • Evaluate and improve the representation of BBA, radiation interactions over the SE Atlantic
    when clouds are absent/present at a range of model scales and resolutions (WP2, 3, 5).
  • Evaluate and improve the representation of BBA-cloud interactions over the SE Atlantic at a range of model scales and resolutions (WP2, 4, 5)

Philip Stier is leading Work Package 4 on aerosol-cloud interactions, Nick Schutgens works on aerosol-cloud interactions using global models and Duncan Watson-Parris is working on the multi-sensor evaluation of the CLARIFY models using the Community Intercomparison Suite.
