Meet...Thorsten Hauler

2 June 2020

Name: Thorsten Hauler
Job title: Head of Research Grants and Contracts

What are you currently working on?
I moved into this new role at the beginning of the year, so there is still lots to explore. I look after the grants team as well as studentship finance (for now), contracts and our cross-departmental project managers. As a priority, I keep these areas running as smoothly as possible while working on new processes and procedures in the background. I also make sure that our fantastic research facilitation team can liaise with the grants team on issues like grant set-up, PI liaison and funder intelligence, enabling a cycle from grant application to award to new application. I am keen to enable new collaborations and work closely with the central contracts team.

Describe a typical day
Like in all jobs of this kind, no day is like any other, and any carefully set plans could be out of the window by the time I have my first coffee… The variety makes my job interesting and keeps my brain agile. I could be busy writing a job description, meeting with the project team of a large grant, facilitating signatures for studentship contracts, meeting with the finance team, setting up a new award, liaising with our research facilitators, improving processes in the grants team, preparing a tender budget for a PI…

If you had an entire day at your disposal (not at work), what would be your ideal way to spend it?
Reading, gardening, cycling, spending quality time with my family – and a bit of home admin.

What is your favourite place in Oxford?
How to choose… I love Exeter College where I sang in the choir for five years, and our museums with their wonderful collections. But close top comes the Weston Library Café with a view of the Sheldonian.

Plan B: what would you be if you weren’t doing the job you are currently doing?
Possibly an atmospheric physicist, but I really love my job!
