Could rust be the secret to next-gen computing technology?

Current silicon-based computing technology is incredibly energy-inefficient and, by 2030, information and communications technology (ICT) is projected to gobble up more than 20% of the global electricity production[1]. After the end of the pandemic, climate change is likely to resume its position as the number one challenge for humanity and finding ways to decarbonise tech is an obvious target for energy savings.

Working with Diamond Light Source, Professor Paolo Radaelli has been leading research into silicon alternatives and his group’s surprising findings have been published in Nature earlier this month.

In this lecture, Professor Radaelli will shed some light on these new discoveries, explain how oxides of common metals like iron (aka rust) and their magnetic properties might just hold the answer, and how inspiration came from the unlikeliest of sources: cosmic strings.

About the speaker:
Professor Paolo G. Radaelli is Dr Lee’s Professor of Experimental Philosophy at the Clarendon Laboratory and Associate Chairman of Physics.

Following a Laurea degree at the Università degli Studi di Milano and a PhD at Illinois Institute of Technology, Professor Radaelli has held posts at the Argonne National Laboratory, CNRS Grenoble, the Institut Laue–Langevin and the ISIS Facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. His main interest is the study of transition metal oxides displaying novel physical phenomena, such as high-temperature superconductivity, “colossal” magneto-resistance or multiferroics behaviour, with the potential of device applications.

Paolo is a keen sailor, having recently achieved the RYA Coastal Skipper Certificate, and tries to spend a few weeks every year sailing in the Solent and in the Mediterranean. He was a crewmember of Team Switzerland in the Atlantic leg of the Round the World Clipper Race 2013/14, starting from London in September 2013. He is also an amateur pianist and continues to pursue his interest for music in a variety of ways.
