Facts and figures

The Physics Department is one of the largest physics departments in the world employing about 475 people and having an annual turnover of about £33m.

The department is part of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division of Oxford University.

We have 104 permanent academic staff and 24 long term research fellows. There are 185 post-doctoral researchers and 162 technical and support staff.

There are 721 undergraduate and 303 graduate students working for degrees in the department.

We receive about £18m of research funding each year from UK Research Councils, mostly STFC and EPSRC with relatively small amounts from NERC and BBSRC, and other agencies.

In the past year eleven researchers from the department have won national or international prizes for their work.

We occupy four buildings in the north-west part of the Science Area, and are currently planning a new building, codenamed CL2, to provide state-of-the-art laboratory space and accommodation for theoreticians.

We have extensive workshop and technical facilities.
