Muons are radioactive particles which behave like tiny magnets.  They can be implanted in matter and are sensitive to local magnetic fields.  Therefore we can use them to study magnets.  We are interested in a range of quantum materials that show exotic magnetic and superconducting properties and most of our experiments use muons.  We also work with high magnetic fields, using very short pulses of current to achieve them.

Muons

Muon-spin rotation (or μSR for short) is a technique for studying various interesting phenomena in condensed matter physics. We perform experiments using the ISIS Pulsed Muon Facility and the Swiss Muon Source at the Paul Scherrer Institute.

Magnets

We also use pulsed magnetic fields to study matter in extreme conditions. Our experiments are performed using the Nicholas Kurti Pulsed Magnet Laboratory in Oxford.
