'New Opportunities with Nanowires’

Nanowires are one dimensional objects which feature unique properties and opportunities. Wires can be grown with different crystal structures than in bulk material, and this gives new options to tune the optical and electrical properties of semiconductors. In this talk I will focus on controlling the crystal structure in wires and how this can be used to fabricate a new type of quantum structure. In addition, 3-dimensional epitaxy is employed to realize silicon and germanium with the hexagonal crystal structure, which is expected to induce a direct band gap in these semiconductors.
