AION: An Atom Interferometer Observatory and Network

We outline the experimental concept and key scientific capabilities of AION (Atom Interferometer Observatory and Network), a proposed UK-based experimental programme using cold strontium atoms to search for ultra-light dark matter, to explore gravitational waves in the mid-frequency range between the peak sensitivities of the LISA and LIGO/Virgo/ KAGRA/INDIGO/Einstein Telescope/Cosmic Explorer experiments, and to probe other frontiers in fundamental physics. AION would complement other planned searches for dark matter, as well as probe mergers involving intermediate mass black holes and explore early universe cosmology. AION would share many technical features with the MAGIS experimental programme in the US, and synergies would flow from operating AION in a network with this experiment, as well as with other atom interferometer experiments such as MIGA, ZAIGA and ELGAR. Operating AION in a network with other gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO, Virgo and LISA would also offer many synergies.

This is the users manual of the black-hole event generator BlackMax, which simulates the experimental signatures of microscopic and Planckian black-hole production and evolution at proton-proton, proton-antiproton and electron-positron colliders in the context of brane world models with low-scale quantum gravity. The generator is based on phenomenologically realistic models free of serious problems that plague low-scale gravity. It includes all of the black-hole gray-body factors known to date and incorporates the effects of black-hole rotation, splitting between the fermions, non-zero brane tension and black-hole recoil due to Hawking radiation (although not all simultaneously).

We present an updated search for the Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson in the final state with missing transverse energy and two jets. We use the full CDF data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb${}^{-1}$ at a proton-antiproton center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV. New to this analysis is the inclusion of a $b$-jet identification algorithm specifically optimized for $H\to b\bar{b}$ searches. Across the Higgs boson mass range $90 \le m_H \le 150$ GeV$/c^2$, the expected 95% credibility level upper limits on the $V H$ production cross section times the $H\to b\bar{b}$ branching fraction are improved by an average of 14% relative to the previous analysis. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV$/c^2$, the observed (expected) limit is 3.06 (3.33) times the standard model prediction, corresponding to one of the most sensitive searches to date in this final state.

We measure the time dependence of the ratio of decay rates for D0 -> K+ pi- to the Cabibbo-favored decay D0 -> K- pi+. The charge conjugate decays are included. A signal of 3.3 x 10^4 D*+ -> pi+ D0, D0 -> K+ pi- decays is obtained with D0 proper decay times between 0.75 and 10 mean D0 lifetimes. The data were recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.6 fb-1 for p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. Assuming CP conservation, we search for D0-D0bar mixing and measure the mixing parameters to be R_D = (3.51 +/- 0.35) x 10^{-3}, y' = (4.3 +/- 4.3) x 10^{-3}, and x'^2 = (0.08 +/- 0.18) x 10^{-3}. We report Bayesian probability intervals in the x'^2 - y' plane and find that the significance of excluding the no-mixing hypothesis is equivalent to 6.1 Gaussian standard deviations, providing the second observation of D0-D0bar mixing from a single experiment.

We measure the asymmetry in the charge-weighted rapidity of the lepton in semileptonic ttbar decays recorded with the CDF II detector using the full Tevatron Run II sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4/fb. A parametrization of the asymmetry as a function of the charge-weighted rapidity is used to correct for the finite acceptance of the detector and recover the production-level asymmetry. The result of afb(lep) = 0.094 +0.032 -0.029 is to be compared to the standard model next-to-leading-order prediction of afb(lep) = 0.038 +-0.003.

Using data from proton-antiproton collisions at Ecms=1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, evidence for the excited resonance state Lambda_b* is presented in its Lambda_b0 pi+ pi- decay, followed by the Lambda_b0 -->Lambda_c+ (-->proton K- pi+) pi- decays. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.6/fb collected by an online event selection based on charged-particle tracks displaced from the proton-antiproton interaction point. The significance of the observed signal is 3.5 Gaussian sigmas. The mass of the observed state is found to be 5919.22 +- 0.76 MeV in agreement with similar findings in proton-proton collision experiments.

We present a measurement of the total decay width of the top quark using events with top-antitop-quark pair candidates reconstructed in the final state with one charged lepton and four or more hadronic jets. We use the full Tevatron Run II data set of $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV proton-antiproton collisions recorded by the CDF II detector. The top-quark mass and the mass of the hadronically-decaying $W$ boson are reconstructed for each event and compared with distributions derived from simulated signal and background samples to extract the top-quark width (\gmt) and the energy scale of the calorimeter jets with {\it in-situ} calibration. For a top-quark mass $\mtop = \gevcc{172.5}$, we find $1.10<\gmt<\gev{4.05}$ at 68% confidence level, which is in agreement with the standard-model expectation of \gev{1.3} and is the most precise direct measurement of the top-quark width to date.

This paper presents a search for standard model Higgs boson production in association with a $W$ boson using events recorded by the CDF experiment in a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb-1. The search is performed using a matrix element technique in which the signal and background hypotheses are used to create a powerful discriminator. The discriminant output distributions for signal and background are fit to the observed events using a binned likelihood approach to search for the Higgs boson signal. We find no evidence for a Higgs boson, and 95% confidence level (C.L.) upper limits are set on the Higgs boson production rate. The observed limits range from 3.5 to 37.6 relative to the standard model expectation for Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV. The 95% C.L. expected limit is estimated from the median of an ensemble of simulated experiments and varies between 2.9 and 32.7 relative to the production rate predicted by the standard model over the Higgs boson mass range studied.


Quantifying uncertainties in the high energy neutrino cross-section

We compare predictions for high energy neutrino and anti-neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross-sections within the conventional DGLAP formalism of next-to-leading order QCD, using the latest parton distribution functions such as CT10, HERAPDF1.5 and MSTW08 and taking account of PDF uncertainties. From this we derive a benchmark cross-section and uncertainty which is consistent with the results obtained earlier using the ZEUS-S PDFs. We advocate the use of this for analysing data from neutrino telescopes, in order to facilitate comparison between their results.

A search for new dielectron mass resonances using data recorded by the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7/fb is presented. No significant excess over the expected standard model prediction is observed. In this dataset, an event with the highest dielectron mass ever observed (960 GeV/c^2) was recorded. The results are interpreted in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model. Combined with the 5.4/fb diphoton analysis, the RS-graviton lower mass limit for the coupling k/\bar{M}_{Pl}=0.1 is 1058 GeV/c^2, making it the strongest limit to date.

A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

We search for high-mass resonances decaying into Z boson pairs using data corresponding to 6 fb^-1 collected by the CDF experiment in p\bar{p} collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. The search is performed in three distinct final states: ZZ --> l^+l^-l^+l^-, ZZ --> l^+l^-\nu\nu, and ZZ --> l^+l^-jj. For a Randall-Sundrum graviton G*, the 95% CL upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio to ZZ, sigma(p\bar{p} --> G^* --> ZZ), vary between 0.26 pb and 0.045 pb in the mass range 300 < M_{G*} < 1000 GeV/c^2.


An Experimenter's View of Lattice QCD

Lattice QCD has the potential this decade to maximize the sensitivity of the entire flavor physics program to new physics and pave the way for understanding physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC in the coming decade. However, the challenge for the Lattice is to demonstrate reliability at the level of a few per cent given a past history of 10-20% errors. The CLEO-c program at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring is providing the data that will make the demonstration possible.


GEM Operation in Negative Ion Drift Gas Mixtures

The first operation of GEM gas gain elements in negative ion gas mixtures is reported. Gains up to several thousand were obtained from single-stage GEMs in carbon disulfide vapor at low pressure, and in mixtures of carbon disulfide with Argon and Helium, some near 1 bar total pressure.

Type inversion in irradiated silicon: a half truth

Charge collection measurements performed on heavily irradiated p-spray dofz pixel sensors with a grazing angle hadron beam provide a sensitive determination of the electric field within the detectors. The data are compared with a complete charge transport simulation of the sensor which includes signal trapping and charge induction effects. A linearly varying electric field based upon the standard picture of a constant type-inverted effective doping density is inconsistent with the data. A two-trap double junction model implemented in ISE TCAD software can be tuned to produce a doubly-peaked electric field which describes the data reasonably well at two different fluences. The modeled field differs somewhat from previous determinations based upon the transient current technique. The model can also account for the level of signal trapping observed in the data.

`That looks weird' - evaluating citizen scientists' ability to detect unusual features in ATLAS images of LHC collisions

Using data from the HiggsHunters.org project we investigate the ability of non-expert citizen scientists to identify long-lived particles, and other unusual features, in images of LHC collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment. More than 32,000 volunteers from 179 countries participated, classifying 1,200,000 features of interest on about 39,000 distinct images. We find that the non-expert volunteers are capable of identifying the decays of long-lived particles with an efficiency and fake-rate comparable to that of the ATLAS algorithms. Volunteers also picked out events with unexpected features, including what appeared to be an event containing a jet of muons.


Precision Determination of V_ub at an e+ e- B Factory

Current methods of determining V_ub are dominated by theoretical uncertainties. We present Monte Carlo simulations of three promising methods of determining V_ub with small theoretical and experimental errors. We find that with data samples of order 1,000 fb-1 the B factories will attain combined experimental errors of a few % on V_ub, much smaller than the theoretical errors associated with new inclusive methods. Lattice QCD offers the promise of rate calculations of exclusive semileptonic decays with errors of a few %. A data sample of order 10,000 fb-1, beyond the capabilities of the current B factories, may be required to achieve an experimental error on the exclusive rate comparable to the theoretical error.
