Past Events for Research

7 Jun 2018 - 12:00pm to 2:00pm

CalTech President Thomas Rosenbaum will discuss new ways to interrogate nature on 7 June 2018 from 12:00-14:00 in the Physics Department (Audrey Wood Seminar Room).

President Rosenbaum will share stories of great discoveries with a CalTech bent and how they illustrate the creativity, persistence, and inspiration of science. He intends to make remarks for 20 to 30 minutes and to take questions on any topic desired for the rest of the time.

This event is free and open for all students and researchers, but there are only 40 places.

Graphene – a single plane of carbon atoms – is probably the simplest material one can imagine. On the other hand, graphene has acquired so many superlatives to its name that it is often called a wonder material.
I will discuss how this research started and, then, try to explain why graphene attracts so much attention these days.

27 Apr 2018 - 9:00am

An annual interdisciplinary forum to bring together physicists, chemists, materials scientists and theoreticians in and around Oxford to advance the science and promote direct collaboration between groups interested in novel quantum materials and phenomena.

The theme of this year is Dynamics and Topology in Quantum Materials and it will take place at Somerville College, Oxford on 27 April 2018.

This symposium is organized by Amalia I. Coldea and Paolo G. Radaelli and is supported by the Oxford Quantum Materials Platform Grant.

Deadline: 9 April 2018

26 Apr 2018 - 6:00pm

What are Quantum Materials?

The Inaugural Quantum Materials Public Lecture will be presented by Professor Andrew Boothroyd. Please join us for an exploration of quantum materials - what they are, what they can do, and why they are so profoundly interesting!

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception in the Martin Wood Lecture Theatre Foyer.
