Physics Alumni event at Oxford & Cambridge Club

THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED. IF YOU'D LIKE TO REGISTER FOR THE WAITING LIST, PLEASE EMAIL ALUMNI@PHYSICS.OX.AC.UK

The event will take place at the beautiful Oxford & Cambridge Club, in central London.

Hosted by Prof John Wheater (Head of the Department) and Dr James Dodd (alumnus, Keble College); with Prof Sonia Contera (Biological Physics) as our guest speaker. On this occasion she will talk about:

'Physics at the interface of biology and nanotechnology: the converging sciences that will shape the future of medicine'.

The powerful knowledge hidden in biology’s complexity is attracting most of the branches of science and technology to coalesce around the study of life, which has ceased to be the sovereign territory of biomedical scientists. In the last decades of the XX century nanotechnology —the capacity to visualize, interact, manipulate and create matter at the nanometre scale—led the way as their physics trained practitioners strived to learn how biology used and designed the properties and functions of its building blocks (proteins and DNA) in the nanoscale. The merging of sciences at the interface with biology is facilitated by medicine and is increasing leading to the development of quantitative mathematical descriptions of biological phenomena, i.e. to the Physics of Life. In my talk I will review how the deployment of nanotechnology and physics are transforming drug delivery, diagnostics, gene editing and regenerative medicine.

The format of the day will be:

18:00 - 18:30 Welcome drink
18:30 - 19:30 Lecture, followed by Q&A
19:30 - 21:00 Drinks and canapes reception
21:30 End of event

If you would like to reserve your place, please fill in the registration form. Places are limited and will be given on a first come, first served basis. If you have any questions or special requirements, do not hesitate to get in touch.
