Event details

Aims

The Isaac Physics Girls Day is an event aimed at encouraging young women to study physical sciences (Physics / Maths / Chemistry / Engineering) at university. The workshop aims to develop each student's confidence and problem solving skills in a core area of physics by tackling a range of examples from idealised problems through to real-world situations. Students will be guided through the problem solving process, and will solve a range of unusual problems with help and guidance. The day will include:

  • A problem-solving Isaac Physics vectors workshop;
  • A 'speed dating' style lunch with female physicists from throughout the department;
  • Talks about current research in the department;
  • A University of Oxford admissions talk.

All refreshments on the day are provided. There may be a travel grant available should this otherwise be a barrier to a student attending the workshop. Please contact us individually if this is required.

Target Audience

All girls in UK Yr 12 (or equivalent) interested in studying Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Engineering at university are welcome to apply. In the case of the event being over-subscribed, priority will be given to local state, non-selective schools. You will be informed whether you have been selected by the end of June 2016.

How to Apply

You must apply by the deadline of Friday 24th June 2016. To be considered, you must:

  • Be studying towards, or have achieved, an A-Level (or an equivalent) in Mathematics and Physics (aiming to achieve A* to B grades);
  • You must complete the Maths & Physics problems in the assignment on the Isaac Physics website.

You must also obtain permission from your school/college to be absent on Thurs 14th July 2016 (this will be checked prior to any offer of a place on the course being made, so please obtain permission prior to applying).
