CUWiP UK is aimed at helping undergraduate physicists who identify as women to continue in physics by providing them with the opportunity to participate in a conference focused on their development as scientists and showcasing options for their educational and professional futures.

CUWiP UK has now been held annually for three years at the University of Oxford]. The conference will run again in March 2018 with some amazing speakers and activities. You can follow us on Twitter (@CUWiPUK) for the latest info.

Background:

In March 2015, the Oxford Women in Physics Society hosted the first Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) UK in the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. The conference enabled attendees to meet, network with, and be inspired by successful women in physics with whom they can share experiences, advice and ideas. The 3-day conference included:

  • Distinguished Speakers: Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Katherine Blundell, Sarah Bohndiek, Kate Lancaster, Helen Mason, Sheila Rowan, Tara Shears, and Heather Williams
  • Academic and Career Panels
  • Skills Workshops: Career Confidence and Assertiveness
  • National Laboratory Tours: Central Laser Facility and Diamond Light Source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
  • Fun Social Activities

Making an Impact:

CUWiP UK was enjoyed by the participants and organising committee alike, and many of the participants commented on how much more positive they felt about their future in physics following the conference:

"The conference meant a lot to me. It was eye opening and a true inspiration.

I really enjoyed the healthy mix of personal experiences, physics topics and personal development that was included in such a short space of time."

"These three days are going to become the seed of something much bigger for me, because not only am I going to work harder in my own right, but I am determined to give something back to those who are coming along next.

I now see that I’m not isolated, I’m part of a community and each of us can make a contribution in her own way. Thank you for all you have done."
