Ultrahigh Energy Neutrinos at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The observation of ultrahigh energy (UHE) neutrinos has become a priority in experimental astroparticle physics. UHE neutrinos can be detected with a variety of techniques. In particular, neutrinos can interact in the atmosphere (downward-going neutrinos) or in the Earth crust (Earth-skimming neutrinos), producing air showers that can be observed with arrays of detectors at the ground. With the Surface Detector Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory we can detect these types of cascades. The distinguishing signature for neutrino events is the presence of very inclined showers produced close to the ground (i.e. after having traversed a large amount of atmosphere). In this work we review the procedure and criteria established to search for UHE neutrinos in the data collected with the ground array of the Pierre Auger Observatory. This includes Earth-skimming as well as downward-going neutrinos. No neutrino candidates have been found, which allows us to place competitive limits to the diffuse flux of UHE neutrinos in the EeV range and above.

We present the first results in the search for relativistic magnetic monopoles with the IceCube detector, a subsurface neutrino telescope located in the South Polar ice cap containing a volume of 1 km$^{3}$. This analysis searches data taken on the partially completed detector during 2007 when roughly 0.2 km$^{3}$ of ice was instrumented. The lack of candidate events leads to an upper limit on the flux of relativistic magnetic monopoles of $\Phi_{\mathrm{90%C.L.}}\sim 3\e{-18}\fluxunits$ for $\beta\geq0.8$. This is a factor of 4 improvement over the previous best experimental flux limits up to a Lorentz boost $\gamma$ below $10^{7}$. This result is then interpreted for a wide range of mass and kinetic energy values.


LHC and Tevatron bounds on the dark matter direct detection cross-section for vector mediators

We study the interactions of a new spin-1 mediator that connects the Standard Model to dark matter. We constrain its decay channels using monojet and monophoton searches, as well as searches for resonances in dijet, dilepton and diboson final states including those involving a possible Higgs. We then interpret the resulting limits as bounds on the cross-section for dark matter direct detection without the need to specify a particular model. For mediator masses between 300 and 1000 GeV these bounds are considerably stronger than the ones obtained under the assumption that the mediator can be integrated out.

Light asymmetric dark matter from new strong dynamics

A ~5 GeV `dark baryon' with a cosmic asymmetry similar to that of baryons is a natural candidate for the dark matter. We study the possibility of generating such a state through dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and show that it can share the relic baryon asymmetry via sphaleron interactions, even though it has no electroweak interactions. The scattering cross-section on nucleons, estimated in analogy to QCD, is within reach of underground direct detection experiments.

Correlation of the highest-energy cosmic rays with the positions of nearby active galactic nuclei

Data collected by the Pierre Auger Observatory provide evidence for anisotropy in the arrival directions of the cosmic rays with the highest energies, which are correlated with the positions of relatively nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) \cite{science}. The correlation has maximum significance for cosmic rays with energy greater than ~ 6x10^{19}$ eV and AGN at a distance less than ~ 75 Mpc. We have confirmed the anisotropy at a confidence level of more than 99% through a test with parameters specified {\em a priori}, using an independent data set. The observed correlation is compatible with the hypothesis that cosmic rays with the highest energies originate from extra-galactic sources close enough so that their flux is not significantly attenuated by interaction with the cosmic background radiation (the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuz'min effect). The angular scale of the correlation observed is a few degrees, which suggests a predominantly light composition unless the magnetic fields are very weak outside the thin disk of our galaxy. Our present data do not identify AGN as the sources of cosmic rays unambiguously, and other candidate sources which are distributed as nearby AGN are not ruled out. We discuss the prospect of unequivocal identification of individual sources of the highest-energy cosmic rays within a few years of continued operation of the Pierre Auger Observatory.


An upper limit to the photon fraction in cosmic rays above 10^19 eV from the Pierre Auger Observatory

An upper limit of 16% (at 95% c.l.) is derived for the photon fraction in cosmic rays with energies greater than 10^19 eV, based on observations of the depth of shower maximum performed with the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. This is the first such limit on photons obtained by observing the fluorescence light profile of air showers. This upper limit confirms and improves on previous results from the Haverah Park and AGASA surface arrays. Additional data recorded with the Auger surface detectors for a subset of the event sample, support the conclusion that a photon origin of the observed events is not favored.


Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (in "The Review of Particle Properties" 2004)

A critical review is given of the current status of cosmological nucleosynthesis. In the framework of the standard model with 3 types of relativistic neutrinos, the baryon-to-photon ratio, \eta, corresponding to the inferred primordial abundances of helium-4 and lithium-7 is presently ~2 \sigma below the value implied by the abundance of deuterium. The latter value is also coincident with the independent determination of \eta from WMAP observations of CMB anisotropy. However taking systematic uncertainties in the abundance estimates into account, there is overall concordance in the range \eta = (3.4 - 6.9) x 10^{-10} @ 95% c.l. corresponding to a cosmological baryon density \Omega_B h^2 = 0.012 - 0.025. If the above discrepancy is due to a neutrino chemical potential, then upto 7.1 effective neutrino species are allowed by nucleosynthesis. Other constraints on new physics are briefly discussed.


A supersymmetric solution to the KARMEN time anomaly

We interpret the KARMEN time anomaly as being due to the production of a (dominantly bino) neutralino with mass 33.9 MeV, which is the lightest supersymmetric particle but decays into 3 leptons through the violation of R-parity. For independent gaugino masses M_1 and M_2 we find regions in the (M_1, M_2, mu, tan beta) parameter space where such a light neutralino is consistent with all experiments. Future tests of this hypothesis are outlined.


Sensitivity of Astrophysical Observations to Gravity-Induced Wave Dispersion in Vacuo

We discuss possible signatures of quantum gravity for the propagation of light, including an energy-dependent velocity (refractive index), dispersion in velocity at a given energy, and birefringence. We also compare the sensitivities of different astrophysical observations, including BATSE data on GRB 920229, BeppoSAX data on GRB 980425, the possible HEGRA observation of GRB 920925c, and Whipple observations of the active galaxy Mrk 421. Finally, we discuss the prospective sensitivities of AMS and GLAST.


Cosmological Constraints on Perturbative Supersymmetry Breaking

We discuss the cosmology of string models with perturbative supersymmetry breaking at a scale of ${\cal O}$(TeV). Such models exhibit Kaluza-Klein like spectra and contain unstable massive gravitinos/gravitons. We find that considerations of primordial nucleosynthesis constrain the maximum temperature following inflation to be not much larger than the supersymmetry breaking scale. This imposes conflicting requirements on the scalar field driving inflation, making it rather difficult to construct a consistent cosmological history for such models.
