Luuk Metselaar

DPhil student in Condensed Matter Theory

I am a fourth year DPhil student in soft condensed matter in the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics with Prof. Julia Yeomans. My research focuses on the dynamics of active and passive nematic liquid crystals, using analytically solvable model systems and lattice-Boltzmann based computational methods. I am particularly interested in two-dimensional blue phases, half-skyrmions and associated vortices. Furthermore, I work on active nematic membranes and their deformation modes. I am associated to the DiStruc ITN as a Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow.

I tutor the third year course fluids, flows and complexity for Lincoln College and Oriel College. I have been teaching a problem class for the fourth year C6 theory option since 2016.
