A search for a heavy Standard Model Higgs boson decaying via H→ZZ→ℓ+ℓ-qq̄, where ℓ=e or μ, is presented. The search uses a data set of pp collisions at s=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7fb-1 collected in 2011 by the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC. No significant excess of events above the estimated background is found. Upper limits at 95% confidence level on the production cross section of a Higgs boson with a mass in the range between 200 and 600GeV are derived. A Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass in the range 300GeV≤mH≤322GeV or 353GeV≤mH≤410GeV is excluded at 95% CL. The corresponding expected exclusion range is 351GeV≤mH≤404GeV at 95% CL. © 2012 CERN.

A search for a Standard Model Higgs boson decaying via H→ZZ→ℓ+ℓ-νν-, where ℓ represents electrons or muons, is presented. It is based on proton-proton collision data at s=7TeV, collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7fb-1. The data agree with the expected Standard Model backgrounds. Upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section are derived for Higgs boson masses between 200 GeV and 600 GeV and the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson with a mass in the range 319-558 GeV is excluded at the 95% confidence level. © 2012 CERN.

This Letter presents measurements of l±νγ and l+l-γ (l=e, μ) production in 1.02fb-1 of pp collision data recorded at s=7TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the first half of 2011. Events dominated by Wγ and Zγ production with leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons are selected, and their production cross sections and kinematic properties are measured in several ranges of the photon transverse energy. The results are compared to Standard Model predictions and are used to determine limits on anomalous WWγ and ZZγ/Zγγ couplings. © 2012 CERN.

Distributions sensitive to the underlying event are studied in events containing one or more charged-particle jets produced in pp collisions at √s=7TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These measurements reflect 800μb-1 of data taken during 2010. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with radius parameter R varying between 0.2 and 1.0. Distributions of the charged-particle multiplicity, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of charged particles, and the average charged-particle pT are measured as functions of pTjet in regions transverse to and opposite the leading jet for 4GeV<pTjet<100GeV. In addition, the R dependence of the mean values of these observables is studied. In the transverse region, both the multiplicity and the scalar sum of the transverse momentum at fixed pTjet vary significantly with R, while the average charged-particle transverse momentum has a minimal dependence on R. Predictions from several Monte Carlo tunes have been compared to the data; the predictions from Pythia 6, based on tunes that have been determined using LHC data, show reasonable agreement with the data, including the dependence on R. Comparisons with other generators indicate that additional tuning of soft-QCD parameters is necessary for these generators. The measurements presented here provide a testing ground for further development of the Monte Carlo models. © 2012 CERN.

A search is presented for direct top squark pair production in final states with one isolated electron or muon, jets, and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV. The measurement is based on 4.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Each top squark is assumed to decay to a top quark and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The data are found to be consistent with standard model expectations. Top squark masses between 230 GeV and 440 GeV are excluded with 95% confidence for massless LSPs, and top squark masses around 400 GeV are excluded for LSP masses up to 125 GeV.


A study of the effect of a 500 kGy(Si) radiation dose on the bandwidth of a radiation hard multi-mode fibre

The fibres used for the readout of the upgraded LHC detectors for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) will be exposed to very high radiation doses of up to ∼ 500 kGy(Si). From DC measurements of the radiation induced absorption, several singlemode (SM) and multimode (MM) fibres have been qualified. The effect of radiation damage on fibres is also expected to have an adverse impact on the fibre bandwidth. This paper explains the theoretical reasons for this and presents results of extensive tests to determine the significance of this effect for one of the previously qualified radiation-hard multi-mode fibres. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.


A search for ttbar resonances in lepton+jets events with highly boosted top quarks collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for resonant production of high-mass top-quark pairs is performed on 2.05 fb^-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected in 2011 with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This analysis of the lepton+jets final state is specifically designed for the particular topology that arises from the decay of highly boosted top quarks. The observed ttbar invariant mass spectrum is found to be compatible with the Standard Model prediction and 95% credibility level upper limits are derived on the ttbar production rate through new massive states. An upper limit of 0.7 pb is set on the production cross section times branching fraction of a narrow 1 TeV resonance. A Kaluza-Klein gluon with a mass smaller than 1.5 TeV is excluded.

This Letter presents evidence for the associated production of a W boson and a top quark using 2.05 fb-1 of pp collision data at s=7TeV accumulated with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on the selection of the dileptonic final states with events featuring two isolated leptons, electron or muon, with significant transverse missing momentum and at least one jet. An approach based on boosted decision trees has been developed to improve the discrimination of single top-quark Wt events from background. A template fit to the final classifier distributions is performed to determine the cross-section. The result is incompatible with the background-only hypothesis at the 3.3σ level, the expected sensitivity assuming the Standard Model production rate being 3.4σ. The corresponding cross-section is determined and found to be σWt=16.8±2.9(stat)±4.9(syst)pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation. From this result the CKM matrix element |Vtb|=1.03-0.19+0.16 is derived assuming that the Wt production through |Vts| and |Vtd| is small. © 2012 CERN.

A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in the H→WW({star operator})→ℓνℓν (ℓ=e, μ) decay mode is presented. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb-1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected during 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events over the expected background is observed. An upper bound is placed on the Higgs boson production cross section as a function of its mass. A Standard Model Higgs boson with mass in the range between 133 GeV and 261 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level, while the expected exclusion range is from 127 GeV to 233 GeV. © 2012 CERN.

© 2012 CERN. Published by Elsevier B.V. A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The datasets used correspond to integrated luminosities of approximately 4.8 fb -1 collected at √s = 7 TeV in 2011 and 5.8 fb -1 at √s = 8 TeV in 2012. Individual searches in the channels H → ZZ(*) → 4l, H → γγ and H → WW(*) eνμν in the 8 TeV data are combined with previously published results of searches for H → ZZ (*) , WW (*) , bb and τ + τ - in the 7 TeV data and results from improved analyses of the H → ZZ(*) →4l and H → γγ channels in the 7 TeV data. Clear evidence for the production of a neutral boson with a measured mass of 126.0±0.4 (stat)±0.4 (sys) GeV is presented. This observation, which has a significance of 5.9 standard deviations, corresponding to a background fluctuation probability of 1.7×10 -9 , is compatible with the production and decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson.

The b-hadron production cross section is measured with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at s=7TeV, using 3.3pb -1 of integrated luminosity, collected during the 2010 LHC run. The b-hadrons are selected by partially reconstructing D z.ast;+μ -X final states. Differential cross sections are measured as functions of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The measured production cross section for a b-hadron with p T>9GeV and |n|<2.5 is 32.7±0.8(stat.)-6.8+4.5(syst.)μb, higher than the next-to-leading-order QCD predictions but consistent within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties. © 2012.

A measurement of event shape variables is presented for large momentum transfer proton-proton collisions using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Six event shape variables calculated using hadronic jets are studied in inclusive multi-jet events in 35 pb<sup>-1</sup> of integrated luminosity at a center-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV. These measurements are compared to predictions by three Monte Carlo event generators containing leading-logarithmic parton showers matched to leading order matrix elements for 2→2 and 2→n (n = 2, …, 6) scattering. Measurements of the third-jet resolution parameter, aplanarity, thrust, sphericity, and transverse sphericity are generally well described. The mean value of each event shape variable is evaluated as a function of the average momentum of the two leading jets p<inf>T,1</inf> and p<inf>T,2</inf>, with a mean pT approaching 1 TeV.

A search for supersymmetry (SUSY) in events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, and at least one hadronically decaying τ lepton, with zero or one additional light lepton (e/μ), has been performed using 4.7 fb−1of proton-proton collision data at √s = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and a 95 % confidence level visible cross-section upper limit for new phenomena is set. In the framework of gauge-mediated SUSY-breaking models, lower limits on the mass scale Λ are set at 54 TeV in the regions where the τ1is the next-to-lightest SUSY particle (tanβ > 20). These limits provide the most stringent tests to date of GMSB models in a large part of the parameter space considered.

We report a measurement of the cross section of single top-quark production in the t-channel using 1.04 fb-1 of pp collision data at s=7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Selected events feature one electron or muon, missing transverse momentum, and two or three jets, exactly one of them identified as originating from a b quark. The cross section is measured by fitting the distribution of a multivariate discriminant constructed with a neural network, yielding σt=83±4(stat.)-19 +20(syst.) pb, which is in good agreement with the prediction of the Standard Model. Using the ratio of the measured to the theoretically predicted cross section and assuming that the top-quark-related CKM matrix elements obey the relation |Vtb|≫|Vts|, |Vtd|, the coupling strength at the W-t-b vertex is determined to be |Vtb|=1.13-0.13 +0.14. If it is assumed that |Vtb|≤1 a lower limit of |Vtb|>0.75 is obtained at the 95% confidence level. © 2012 CERN.

Measurements are presented of the properties of high transverse momentum jets, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s=7TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35pb -1 and were collected with the ATLAS detector in 2010. Jet mass, width, eccentricity, planar flow and angularity are measured for jets reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0.6 and 1.0, with transverse momentum pT>300GeV and pseudorapidity |η|<2. The measurements are compared to the expectations of Monte Carlo generators that match leading-logarithmic parton showers to leading-order, or next-to-leading-order, matrix elements. A search for a fermiophobic Higgs boson using diphoton events produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4. 9 fb-1 collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. A specific benchmark model is considered where all the fermion couplings to the Higgs boson are set to zero and the bosonic couplings are kept at the Standard Model values (fermiophobic Higgs model). The largest excess with respect to the background-only hypothesis is found at 125. 5 GeV, with a local significance of 2. 9 standard deviations, which reduces to 1. 6 standard deviations when taking into account the look-elsewhere effect. The data exclude the fermiophobic Higgs model in the ranges 110. 0-118. 0 GeV and 119. 5-121. 0 GeV at 95 % confidence level. © 2012 CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.

The results of a search for the production of second generation scalar leptoquarks are presented for final states consisting of either two muons and at least two jets or a muon plus missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. A total of 1.03 fb<sup>−1</sup> integrated luminosity of protonproton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider at √s = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector is used for the search. The event yields in the signal regions are found to be consistent with the Standard Model background expectations. The production of second generation leptoquarks is excluded for a leptoquark mass m<inf>LQ</inf> < 594 (685) GeV at 95 % confidence level, for a branching ratio of 0.5 (1.0) for leptoquark decay to a muon and a quark.

A measurement of the cross section of top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is reported. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb-1. Events with an isolated electron or muon and a τ lepton decaying hadronically are used. In addition, a large missing transverse momentum and two or more energetic jets are required. At least one of the jets must be identified as originating from a b quark. The measured cross section, σtt-=186±13(stat.)±20(syst.)±7(lumi.) pb, is in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. © 2012 CERN.
