The effect of final HERA inclusive cross section data on MMHT2014 PDFs

We investigate the effect of including the HERA run I + II combined cross section data on the MMHT2014 PDFs. We present the fit quality within the context of the global fit and when only the HERA data are included. We examine the changes in both the central values and uncertainties in the PDFs. We find that the prediction for the data is good, and only relatively small improvements in χ2 and changes in the PDFs are obtained with a refit at both NLO and NNLO. PDF uncertainties are slightly reduced. There is a small dependence of the fit quality on the value of Q2min.

I present the MMHT2014 PDFs, an update of the previous major release in the same framework, i.e. MSTW2008. I discuss the changes in both the central values and uncertainties in the PDFs due to changes in theoretical procedures and the impact of new, largely LHC data-sets. I discuss the correlation between the PDFs and the strong coupling constant and the constraint on the latter. I also present some results with varying quark masses.


Superchic 2: A new Monte Carlo for central exclusive production

We present the first results of the new SuperChic 2 Monte Carlo event generator. This includes significant theoretical improvements and updates, most importantly, a fully differential treatment of the soft survival factor, as well as a greater number of generated processes.

I present results on updates on PDFs which are obtained within the general framework which led to the MSTW2008 PDF sets. There are some theory and procedural improvements and a variety of new data sets, including many relevant up-To-date LHC data. A new set of PDFs is very close to being finalised, with no significant changes expected to the preliminary PDFs shown here.

Sharpening m<inf>T2</inf> cusps: The mass determination of semi-invisibly decaying particles from a resonance

We revisit mass determination techniques for the minimum symmetric event topology, namely X pair production followed by X → ℓN, where X and N are unknown particles with the masses to be measured, and N is an invisible particle, concentrating on the case where X is pair produced from a resonance. We consider separate scenarios, with different initial constraints on the invisible particle momenta, and present a systematic method to identify the kinematically allowed mass regions in the (mN, mX ) plane. These allowed regions exhibit a cusp structure at the true mass point, which is equivalent to the one observed in the mT2 endpoints in certain cases. By considering the boundary of the allowed mass region we systematically define kinematical variables which can be used in measuring the unknown masses, and find a new expression for the mT2 variable as well as its inverse. We explicitly apply our method to the case that X is pair produced from a resonance, and as a case study, we consider the process pp → A → χ̃+1 χ̃1-, followed by χ̃1±→ℓ ± ν̃ℓ, in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and show that our method provides a precise measurement of the chargino and sneutrino masses, mX and mN, at 14 TeV LHC with 300 fb-1 luminosity. © 2014 The Author(s).
