All macOS Apple desktop systems have Apple Screen Sharing enabled which allows you to remotely access a Apple desktop system environment.

Open a ssh tunnel via the ssh gateway on port 5900 before you can connect to the systems. This no longer work through the Physics VPN.

If your Mac is damaged and needs repair, please first bring it to Physics IT Support so that we can determine what repairs may be necessary.

If your Mac is in warranty (less than four years old) then it can be repaired for free depending on the terms of the warranty and the repair needed. Physics IT Support will arrange this for you.

Platforms: Windows/Mac/Linux Self Service is available on Physics-managed Windows and Mac systems. It's not yet available on Linux systems.

Instructions for Obtaining kits from the local kits server on a Mac system

To access copies of software distribution kits on our local server from a Mac OS X system you may do the following.

  • Go to the main menu bar (which starts with Finder).
  • Click on "Go".
  • Select "Connect to server"
  • Type in:
    smb://LOCALKITS.physics.ox.ac.uk/

    and then select "OxKits_MATLAB" from the list presented. You will then be prompted for your Physics Windows network authentication details:

1. Click on the wireless icon at the top right hand corner of the screen, then click Physics_S in the list of other networks.

The MacPorts Project is an open-source community initiative to design an easy-to-use system for compiling, installing, and upgrading a wide range of Free and Open-Source Software on macOS. A Physics MacPorts Build is installed on the majority of the Apple desktop systems or it can also be installed via the Self Service application. This will install a common set of software that is used in the Physics Department.
