Very successful first online alumni event

Dr James Dodd

'The Idea of Particle Physics'
by Dr James Dodd

Hosted by Prof Ian Shipsey, Head of Physics, with the collaboration of Prof Daniela Bortoletto (Head of Particle Physics).

Our first alumni event online took place on the 20th of June, with more than 300 registrants from all over the world. It was fantastic to be able to connect with so many of you in this way across the miles.

Dr Dodd gave a wonderful talk, he has recently finished the fourth edition of his book 'The Ideas of Particle Physics' (co-written with Prof Ben Gripaios), and alumni were able to participate via Zoom. The book is set to be published in September this year.

Many of you will recognise the speaker, as he is a fellow alumnus (Keble, 1973) as well as the co-founder of the St Cross Centre for the History and Philosophy of Physics (HAPP), among many other things.

We have recorded the event and now everyone can watch it here.
Lots of fantastic questions followed, and you will find some on the video, and all those still to be replied by the end of the event (the interest was phenomenal!) have been transcribed and are attached (see pdf document).

Any member of our alumni community willing to purchase the book, can use the code below to obtain a generous discount as soon as it is printed.

Finally, lots of you have kindly expressed interest in finding out more about all the ways you can support our department, and either myself or our new colleague, Lisa Willmot, will get in touch.

We sincerely thank you for your continued support!

As always, please write to me with any ideas, comments, suggestions...we hope to host many more events to keep your interest in physics very much alive :)

Take care,
Val
