December at the Clarendon

An update from the Alumni Office

The month of December sees the Michaelmas term ending, and the fast approaching of winter with shorter, darker, colder days...
Lots of activity at the Clarendon, as usual, with some exciting news we'd like to share:

The Department will lead a consortium that will aim to deliver quantum technologies including building a small fully-functional and scalable quantum computer. You can read the full press release here.

Preliminary work for the New Physics Building (it will be called the 'Beecroft Building') has started and this week we have machinery and all sorts of things going on in the car park at the front, as you can see in the photo:

The common room keeps getting better for the comfort and wellbeing of our students and staff, and this week a new water fountain has been installed. Last week we held a lovely Christmas Lunch and the delicious Full English breakfast is served every Thursday. Friends and Alumni of Physics are welcome to come and use the Common room for meals or coffee during the week, in or outside term time. Just report to the Reception on your way in.

Today the 'State of the Nation' talk by the Head of Department, Prof John Wheater was held in the Martin Wood Lecture Theatre, attended by staff and students to hear an up to date summary of what is happening and where are we heading for as a Department, including an interesting talk about the C-BASS project in which some of our colleagues are leading on; followed by an informal reception in the foyer. A chance to meet colleagues and catch up before the Christmas break.

If you come to visit us, you will find the lovely Amanda and Hannah in the main reception, and they have made it look very festive...

Finally, a reminder about the Physics Carol Service to be held next week, more details here. This year, the readers will be Prof Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Prof Robert Taylor.

Keep an eye on the Events section for lots of exciting events that we are planning for the New Year. We hope to see you soon!

From the whole Department, we wish you a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!
