“Organic solar films: A new photovoltaic technology for building-integrated photovoltaics”

Vacuum deposited organic solar cells reach meanwhile routinely efficiencies above 12% together with excellent durability. On this basis, Heliatek operates the world’s first fully integrated vacuum roll-to-roll-production tool. This production line for organic tandem junction solar cells has been successfully ramped-up and delivers high quality solar films with efficiencies above 7% on the active area. As a special benefit of organic photovoltaics, the cells and modules show efficiencies that increase with increasing temperature and, furthermore have an excellent low light behavior. These two factors suggest a superior harvesting factor (harvested kWh per installed kWp) which is confirmed by outdoor measurements. These features together with their low weight, high aesthetic quality and the option to prepare semitransparent energy harvesting films makes OPV films ideally suited for building integration, especially façade applications. We will show a number of demonstration objects successfully installed by Heliatek and its partners and discuss the market perspectives of organic building integrated photovoltaics.
