International Masterclasses in Particle Physics
This is an exciting opportunity to take part in an International Masterclass in Particle Physics. Students will get insight into topics and methods of basic research relating to matter and forces. They will perform measurements on real data from the ATLAS experiments at CERN and participate in an international video conference to discuss the results.
Who is it for?
The event is aimed at Year 12 students with passion and potential in Physics. Schools are invited to bring up to four students to the event and we encourage schools to invite an equal number of girls and boys. We hope teachers may attend to ensure the students get the most out of the day, but if this is not convenient then they may attend on their own. Priority will be given to schools with less tradition of students making applications to Oxford. Background to the masterclasses
Each year more than 10,000 high school students in 46 countries come to one of about 200 nearby universities or research centres for one day in order to unravel the mysteries of particle physics. Lectures from active scientists give insight in topics and methods of basic research at the fundaments of matter and forces, enabling the students to perform measurements on real data from particle physics experiments themselves. At the end of each day, like in an international research collaboration, the participants join in a video conference for discussion and combination of their results. See here for media coverage.
