Last year's event

Last year nearly 1,200 people were able to experience exciting hands-on stalls for all ages, with astronomers available to answer all their questions about space: “What constellations can you see in the night sky this month?”, “Why do stars explode?”, “Is there life on other planets?” and “What happened at the very beginning of the universe?”. You can read more about it in our newsletter.

Stargazing Oxford 2014

BBC Stargazing LIVE is returning to BBC Two on the 7th-9th of January 2014 and Stargazing Oxford is also back! It will be an opportunity to find out more about our night sky, from new planets to far-off galaxies and the vastness of the Universe.

This year visitors can also learn about how weather in space affects us on Earth, what is involved in space exploration and the wonders of the Milky Way and other Galaxies.

Rain, sun, cloud, snow - there will still be plenty to see and do.

Try your hand at AstroCrafts (age 6+), listen to bite-sized flash talks on a wide range of fascinating topics covering the latest research in astronomy and astrophysics, submit an entry to our astro photography competition , present a space weather broadcast or talk to researchers about their work.

You can also get some hints and tips about star-gazing at home, with workshops run by local experts from Oxfordshire amateur astronomy groups and the University physics department. At the event there will be opportunities to “see” the Sun through solar telescopes, observe the night sky with our range of telescopes, tour the sky in an inflatable planetarium (Age 8+, last showing 9:20pm) and more.
