I am a DPhil student under the supervision of Prof. Andre Lukas and the purpose of my research is to calculate Yukawa couplings in heterotic string theories, using both analytical and numerical methods. Analytically, this is done through the compactification of the Yang-Mills and fermionic sectors of the heterotic 10d action, the ultimate goal being to derive a N=1 SUSY theory in 4 dimensions and obtain the dependence of the Yukawa couplings to the moduli of the Calabi-Yau manifold. More explicitly, for specific line bundle models of SO(10) or SU(5), the Yukawa couplings are the result of integration of harmonic bundle-valued forms over projective spaces. The numerical way to proceed is to do a Monte Carlo integration, by defining an auxiliary measure of the manifold and generating random points in the ambient space, distributed according to this measure.
