Unix
The only methods to connect to the interactive servers are via either SSH or Remote Desktop Protocol. For security reasons, users cannot connect directly to these services, but must connect via a bastion or proxy service.
Connecting to the Interactive Servers via SSH
From Windows 10 OS
PuTTY is the preferred option – available from “Physics Self Service” on department-managed systems.

Introduction/Scope
This page documents how to tidy up files and directories in data areas. The documentation contains specifics for LHCb and ATLAS data areas, but some of the info is useful for other data areas and home directories.
NOTE: Data areas are not backed up!!

When outside Physics you can access any of the files in your home directory using SFTP/SCP.
The SFTP protocol provides similar functionality to FTP but is secure as information is encrypted. SCP is a secure copy protocol and has a command line syntax similar to `copy` commands. The services are accessed via the Windows front end server (winssh1) e.g. from a command line prompt on Linux (or any other OS with command line clients)

The general purpose Linux login servers are pplxint12 and pplxint13, running Enterprise Linux 9 (EL9) operating system.
These interactive servers gives access to a HTcondor batch system running several EL9 worker nodes. All machines remain switched on except for during minimal maintenance periods.
In case of software or hardware problems, the system may have to be taken down at short notice. Any problems should be directed to itsupportATphysics.ox.ac.uk

Direct logins using X are a problem because it's unencrypted; that means that your username and password go over the network visible to anyone bothered enough to look for them. The following set up avoids direct log-ins and demonstrates the set up of key based (passwordless) authentication.
SSH access through puTTY
The departmental Windows machines allow you to use PuTTY to connect to any of the interactive machines and use the command line. See the instructions in the "Using PuTTY from Windows" section.
