If possible you should always use a pathname which is independent of the name of the underlying server. However, sometimes that is not possible owing to the available features of your operating system or your system's physical or logical location.

To find the name of your underlying data storage server you can do the following:

The following procedures should be followed when connecting equipment to the Physics cable network. This is necessary to prevent disruption to other users from configuration problems on the equipment being connected.

The recommendations below are for equipment which will be more or less continuously connected to the network.

While the data stored on the experimental data storage servers is backed up on a regular basis it's recommended that all experimental data is also backed up elsewhere: how that's done will depend on the amount of data involved.

Experimental data storage may be accessed on Windows in a number of ways.

(1) Y:\DAQ\subdepartment\nameofgroup (in Physics domain)
(2) \\physics\DFS\DAQ\subdepartment\nameofgroup (in Physics domain)
(3) \\physics.ox.ac.uk\DFS\DAQ\subdepartment\nameofgroup (outside Physics domain)
(4) \\CLARENDONDAQ\subdeptDAQ\nameofgroup (in Physics domain, not recommended)
(5) \\CLARENDONDAQ.physics.ox.ac.uk\subdeptDAQ\nameofgroup (outside Physics domain, not recommended)

Each group is assigned storage space on the data storage server(s) according to each group's expressed requirements.

Data storage servers provide secure storage for experimental data.

For Clarendon groups this is provided by the CLARENDONDAQ server.

N.B. CLARENDONDAQ is currently being replaced by ALDAQ1, CMDAQ1, CMDAQ2, CMDAQ3 .

If possible a form of address independent of a specific server name should be used to avoid disruption if a server is replaced for any reason.
