Evidence of topological excitations in a quantum magnet

Condensed matter physics is the study of the multitude of ways in which matter can organise itself. Conventional phases, such as a ferromagnet, metal or superconductor, can be characterised by looking at the system locally in space. However, topological phases of matter require a different approach and in a recent Nature Physics paper we show the importance of topology for the excitations in a quantum magnet.

Oxford reflects fondly on Cassini as the end draws near

Oxford reflects fondly on Cassini as the end draws near

On Wednesday 26 April 2017, Cassini became the first spacecraft to ever plunge between Saturn and its innermost rings. In doing so, it came closer to the planet than any probe before it. This historic manoeuvre marks the beginning of the end, for what has been a landmark space mission.

Isaac Physics Calculus Workshop

Date:
16 Jun 2017 - 9:00am to 1:00pm
Venue:
Abingdon School, Abingdon
Audience:
Schools (secondary)

The Abingdon Science Partnership have teamed up with Isaac Physics and the University of Oxford Physics Department to offer an exciting end of term experience which aims to stretch and challenge Year 12 Physics students. We aim to help students improve their problem solving skills within a scientific context, a key requirement for students who wish to study STEM subjects at university.

A mechanical route to cell death

A MECHANICAL ROUTE TO CELL DEATH

By exploiting analogies to ‘active’ liquid crystals Oxford theoretical physicists have contributed to discovering a mechanical mechanism controlling the extrusion of dying cells from layers of tissue.
