Title: Unveiling the Birth of Stars and Galaxies

Abstract: Understanding the birth of stars is one of grand challenges of 21st century astrophysics, with impacts extending from the formation of planets to the birth and shaping of galaxies themselves. The challenge has been all the more difficult because the most active birth sites are largely hidden in visible light.

Abstract: Dennis Sciama's 1959 book The Unity of the Universe was ostensibly about the Steady State theory, a cosmological/astrophysical theory which was to be comprehensively and irreversibly refuted by observations only a few years later. But it wasn't really about that.

'Waiting for Higgs'

Prof Sir Christopher Llewellyn Smith gave a lecture last Friday, and it is now available to watch on video for those who could not assist.

This lecture was part of the Physics Colloquium, which offers lectures to members of the University (staff and students) as well as alumni, on Fridays during term time, at 4:15 pm.

This year’s Cherwell-Simon Lecture on “Emergent Law” will be held on Friday 3rd May 2013 (16.30 pm, Martin Wood Lecture Theatre).
The speaker will be Prof Robert Laughlin, Stanford University, Nobel Prize in Physics 1998.
